Haemodynamic monitoring in the coronary care unit using the Swan-Ganz right heart catheter.

چکیده
Thirteen patients with complicated acute myocardial infarction were studied in the coronary care unit to confirm the feasibility of using the Swan-Ganz right heart catheter to obtain pulmonary artery diastolic pressures, pulmonary arterial wedge pressures, and pulmonary artery blood samplesfor oxygen measurements. The aim of the study was to assess the haemodynamic changes after an acute myocardial infarction, the haemodynamic response to therapeutic interventions, and the diagnosis of a complicating ventricular septal defect. Eight patients had left ventricular failure (group I) andfive had cardiogenic shock (group 2). All patients in group i were studied within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms of acute myocardial infarction and the

Non-invasive cardiac output determination by two-dimensional independent Doppler during and after cardiac surgery.
PURPOSE This study was to compare noninvasive measurement of cardiac output (CO) using a novel Doppler technique with invasive CO measurements in the postcardiac surgical intensive care unit. DESCRIPTION Thirty-six patients (67.2 +/- 10 years, New York Heart Association functional class 3.1 +/- 0.3) undergoing coronary revascularization were prospectively examined postoperatively. One hundred...
متن کاملInadvertent fracture during the attempted removal of entrapped Swan-Ganz catheter.
Dear Editor, Pulmonary artery catheter is widely used in cardiovascular surgical practice. Various complications of the Swan-Ganz catheter during insertion, its long-term placement, or removal are well known since its introduction.1-5 Herein, we report a case of the inadvertent fracture of an entrapped Swan-Ganz catheter during its attempted removal with moderate external traction. A 36-year-ol...
متن کاملPulmonary artery catheter knotting in a coronary artery bypass surgery patient.
A fifty seven years old female patient came to operating room for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. After induction, invasive monitoring lines were placed. Pulmonary artery catheter (PAC) floated after three attempts and it was wedged at 60cm. Intra operative course was smooth and patient transferred to cardiac intensive care unit (CICU). First chest X-ray revealed PAC knotting in...
متن کاملA reappraisal for the use of pulmonary artery catheters
The history of the pulmonary artery catheter spans almost 90 years from the first reported cardiac catheterization by Werner Forssmann (on himself!) in 1929. Some 25 years later, a balloon-tipped catheter was developed by Lategola and Rahn [1] and used in dogs, but the name of the catheter (and much of the credit for its invention) went to Swan and Ganz, whose now famous paper on the use of a b...
متن کاملThe Swan-Ganz catheter in the cardiac laboratory.
In I970, Swan and associates reported on their results in catheterization of the right heart with a soft, flow-directed, balloon-tipped catheter of their design. Using the 5F size catheter the pulmonary artery was rapidly and safely catheterized in 95 per cent of patients in intensive care situations without the aid of fluoroscopy. The availability of the Swan-Ganz catheter (Edwards Laboratorie...
